ABOUT THE CENTER
| Every
wave of immigration into the United States has faced
fear and hostility, especially during times of economic
hardship, political turmoil, or war. The current "War
on Terror" has carried with it attacks against
immigrants and refugees, with a very real and human
impact on immigrant families, communities and lives.
As the social and political environment becomes more
hostile, many immigrant communities are turning inward
for self-defense—but others are ready and willing to
act.
The Center for Intercultural Organizing leads grassroots
efforts to protect and expand immigrant and refugee
rights through education, civic engagement, community
organizing and intergenerational leadership development.
Grounded in the belief that organizing people who are
suffering oppression has the greatest potential to affect
the root causes of economic, political and social injustice,
we involve our constituents in all aspects of program
development and implementation. In addition, the Center
provides the non-immigrant community explicit strategies
for being good allies.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM AREAS
Our programs, both internal and external, offer a safe space
for cross-cultural dialogue, analysis, strategy building and
organizing that foster long-term alliances between immigrant
and refugee communities. The Center for Intercultural Organizing
integrates four critical areas that, when combined, catalyze
systemic change: community education, civic engagement, organizing
and mobilization, and intergenerational leadership development.
- Community Education: The Center educates
immigrants, refugees and U.S.-born allies on pressing community
issues and strengthens and supports existing efforts to
bring visibility to immigrant and refugee struggles.
- Civic Engagement: Our civic engagement
program provides a pathway for immigrants and refugees to
participate in democratic processes through skill-building
workshops and hands-on projects that produce concrete improvements
in their lives.
- Organizing and Mobilization: The Center
holds organizing trainings for immigrant and refugee community
leaders and mobilizes multiple diverse constituencies to
act collectively.
- Intergenerational Leadership Development:
The Center develops new leaders throughout our various internal
and external programs, giving special attention to youth.
In 2007/2008, the Center partnered with Oregon
Action and Latino
Network to develop a Diversity
and Civic Leadership Academy for people of color.
