LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER

As a refugee from war-torn Somalia, I believe there is an alternative to violence, a common vision to replace division, a world in which global unity is possible. The Global Portland Festival offers Portlanders a glimpse of that vision. It is a time to honor the common humanity that brings us together, a day to eat, dance, sing, connect, and thrive.

In 2004, several thousand people came together to celebrate the event's motto: hope begins when fear ends. More than one hundred volunteers representing our city’s diverse cultures and communities organized Global Portland. Dozens of multicultural organizations joined the Center and the PSU Multicultural Center to co-sponsor the event.

In light of the continuing violence across the globe, positive celebrations like the Global Portland Festival have become even more essential. We need more ways to counter the fear and mistrust isolating our community’s diverse citizenry. We need a place where Portlanders can come together and engage among and across cultural lines. We need all residents to contribute to the vibrancy of our city and to be partners in the security of our community.

In essence, we need one another.

Therefore, we hope you will join us by supporting the Global Portland Festival through the purchase of a booth for your community group, as a festival merchant, a food vendor, a donor, or a volunteer. This event would not be possible without the literally hundreds of volunteer hours and thousands of dollars in donated time and resources. We hope you will also be inspired to join us in this effort.

In Solidarity,

Kayse Jama, Founder, Community Language and Culture Bank
